Bvumba – The Mountains of the Mist

In the Eastern city of Mutare, Zimbabwe, nestled along the border between Zimbabwe and Mozambique, you’ll find the captivating Vumba mountains. Raised in Mutare, I frequently visited these mountains during my upbringing. My piano instructor resided in the Vumba, and during the picturesque drive to this destination, I would mentally play the jazz standard “Misty.” Erroll Garner, the composer, noted that the song was inspired by clouds and thoughts of his wife. While I was far from having a spouse at that time, the cloud-filled views of Vumba left a lasting impression on me.

Vumba presents an array of accommodation choices, ranging from the luxurious Leopard Rock and The White Horse Inn to charming bed and breakfast lodges and Airbnb options. An exceptional pause in your journey is Tony’s Coffee Shop, a quaint establishment personally managed by Tony. Indulge in delectable cakes, a diverse selection of teas and coffees, and refreshing natural juices.

Yet, what truly sets Vumba apart is its abundant biodiversity. The assortment of trees, plants, and lively birdlife, featuring several unique species, establishes it as a haven for nature enthusiasts. Simango monkeys, Sun Squirrels, and dwarf chameleons also inhabit these mountains.

For golf enthusiasts, Leopard Rock boasts a championship golf course, acclaimed as one of the most picturesque globally and ranked among the top ten on the continent. Over the years, the hotel has welcomed royalty, statesmen, sports and film personalities, business leaders, and various celebrities from around the world.

In the heart of Vumba, Hivu provides horseback riding experiences catering to beginners, children, and experienced riders alike. Adventure seekers can also embark on mountain hiking excursions, adding a thrilling dimension to their visit.

For enthusiasts of birdwatching, the Eastern Highlands, specifically Vumba, call out with their avian wonders. Vumba is the residence of Seldom Seen, recognized as one of Southern Africa’s foremost birding locations. Here, visitors have the opportunity to observe several of the region’s rare and restricted-range species, including the Swynnerton’s Robin, Red Faced Crimsonwing, and Buff Spotted Flufftail. Vumba not only radiates an aura of mystery but also offers a secure and serene setting, making it an ideal destination for all nature lovers.

Over time, my musical preferences have evolved, and while “Misty” still triggers nostalgia, I now find greater enjoyment in listening to MOKOOMBA, a proudly Zimbabwean six-member ensemble hailing from Mosia O Tunya (Victoria Falls). This band has earned acclaim as one of the most thrilling musical acts from Africa in the 21st century, but let’s not delve too deep into that!

As I drive up the Vumba Mountains, something I get to do often, the allure of the mountains remains unchanged, and the mesmerizing mist continues to captivate. Nevertheless, with time, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of why American Jazz pianist Errol Garner claimed that the melody of his composition “Misty” was inspired by clouds and the thoughts of his wife. The interplay of clouds and mist evokes a unique emotional response. Vumba stands as the quintessential romantic getaway!

Embark on a journey to the Eastern Highlands in Zimbabwe, and discover the enchanting beauty of the Bvumba Mountains. It’s an experience that goes beyond the ordinary, inviting you to explore and savour the magic within this mist-shrouded haven.
