Kumneger Teketel Pays Tribute to Late Ethiopian Tourism Journalist Zerihun Girma

In a poignant reflection shared with the hospitality community on his LinkedIn page, Kumneger Teketel W/Gebriel of OZZIE Business & Hospitality Group has paid tribute to veteran tourism journalist and one of Ethiopia’s most influential voices, the late Zerihun Girma.

Described by Teketel as an “Industry Guru” and a “National Visionary,” Girma passed away at the age of 42, leaving behind a legacy that transformed the landscape of Ethiopian tourism and media.

A Journey of Discipline and Purpose

Teketel highlights Girma’s unique path, noting that he began his career as a chemistry teacher in the Gurage Zone before his passion for storytelling led him to journalism in 2009. Over 17 years, Girma became a trusted voice on major platforms such as Zami 90.7 FM and Ethio FM 107.8, documenting the heart of Ethiopia through radio, TV, and social media.

Architect of East African Tourism

In his tribute, Teketel emphasizes that Girma was far more than a journalist; he was a master planner and strategic advisor. Teketel credits Girma with playing a key role in:

  • MICE & Investment: Serving as a key planner for the MICE East Africa Forum and the Hotel Show Africa International Hospitality & Tourism Investment Tradeshow.
  • Landmark Media: Developing influential works such as “Wub Hager,” “Guzoye / My Travel,” and “MICE Addis”.
  • Policy & Training: Building capacity in urban tourism journalism and earning over a dozen sector-based awards for his expertise.

“Forever in our Hearts and History”

Beyond the professional accolades, Teketel remembers Girma as a devoted husband and father of two who instilled deep patriotism and cultural pride in those around him.

“His legacy lives on—in the platforms he built, the people he mentored, and the vision he championed,” Teketel shared, concluding that while Ethiopia mourns a great loss, Girma’s contributions to tourism policy and media content development remain a permanent part of the nation’s history.
