The New Yam Festival: A Celebration of Gratitude in the Heart of Enugu
Traditionally, the oldest man in the community, the traditional ruler, or—as my father told me—the Eze Ji (the priest in charge of the rituals), performs the symbolic first tasting of the yam. This act is deeply spiritual; it represents thanksgiving to the ancestors, the earth, and the divine for a successful farming season. Until this moment happens, no one eats the new yam.
