Meet Mr. Malawi: The Young Guide Putting His Country on the Map
Lovemore Omic Mfunya—known to his followers as Mr. Malawi—is a young Malawian tourism professional whose passion for travel, culture, nature, and conservation is helping showcase the beauty of Malawi to travellers at home and abroad.
Hailing from Mangochi, Lovemore is a qualified tour and mountain guide who works as a Sales & Marketing Consultant and Mountain Guide at Orbis DMC, a destination management company in Malawi. His day-to-day spans travel planning, client communication, itinerary development, tour operations, and guiding.
For Lovemore, tourism should be about more than attracting international visitors. He believes strongly that Malawians should explore their own country, discover its attractions, and appreciate the richness of their national heritage. Conservation runs just as deeply through his work: as a guide and tourism professional, he promotes responsible tourism and encourages travellers to respect wildlife, natural environments, and local communities.
He adopted the name “Mr. Malawi” as a reflection of that devotion. To him, the title represents far more than tourism—it encompasses Malawi’s people, culture, food, history, nature, and destinations. Through his platforms, he aims to tell positive Malawian stories and inspire both residents and international visitors to discover the country. He describes himself simply: a young tourism ambassador working to grow Malawi’s tourism industry.
His interests take him to some of Malawi’s best-known destinations, including Lake Malawi National Park and Cape Maclear, Liwonde National Park, Majete Wildlife Reserve, Mount Mulanje, Zomba Plateau, Nyika National Park, Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve, and Nkhata Bay. He also spotlights places around Mangochi and the southern lakeshore, as well as Blantyre and Zomba, where travellers can experience Malawi’s history, culture, and urban attractions.
Yet it is the lesser-known corners of the country that most capture his attention. Through his travels and social media presence, Lovemore seeks to shine a light on destinations beyond the traditional tourism hotspots.
In doing so, he represents a growing generation of African tourism professionals using education, guiding, digital platforms, and personal travel experiences to champion their countries—one story, one journey at a time.
