Mmolotsi Sets Out Vision for Botswana’s Green Economy at Sustainability Week
Delivering welcome remarks on the second day of Botswana Sustainability Week 2026 at the Sedia Hotel, the Minister of Environment and Tourism, Hon. Wynter Mmolotsi, issued a clear call to action: it is time to move beyond high-level commitments and embrace practical steps that drive both economic growth and environmental protection.
Addressing delegates under the week’s theme, “The Business of Sustainability: Activating Private Sector Leadership to Drive Botswana’s Next Growth Economy,” the Minister emphasized that the private sector holds the key to scaling sustainable solutions through innovation, strategic investment, and the integration of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into core business operations.
Resource-Rich, Community-Focused
Minister Mmolotsi noted that Botswana’s natural resources remain fundamental to the nation’s economic stability, underpinning critical sectors such as tourism, job creation, and food security, while reinforcing the country’s global reputation for conservation.
However, he stressed that economic value must translate to local benefit. The Minister underscored the importance of ensuring that communities living alongside wildlife are not only heard in decision-making processes but actively benefit from tourism, conservation efforts, and responsible investment.
“Sustainable development must create lasting value for both present and future generations,” he said, reaffirming the government’s commitment to aligning economic transformation with environmental stewardship.
A Milestone for Green Investment
A central highlight of the Minister’s address was the official rollout of Botswana’s National ESG Strategy and Framework. Developed by the National Planning Commission in collaboration with UNDP Botswana, the framework provides a comprehensive roadmap for aligning business performance with measurable environmental and social impact.
By standardizing ESG practices, the framework aims to strengthen Botswana’s ability to attract green financing and position the country as a competitive destination for sustainable investment.
Forging Practical Partnerships
Looking ahead, Minister Mmolotsi challenged investors, policymakers, and industry leaders to move past dialogue and forge practical, investment-ready partnerships. He identified four key areas for collaboration:
- Renewable Energy: Accelerating the transition to clean power sources.
- Sustainable Tourism: Enhancing eco-friendly travel initiatives that protect biodiversity.
- Climate-Smart Agriculture: Building food security through resilient farming practices.
- Community Development: Ensuring local populations are integral to the green economy.
As Botswana Sustainability Week 2026 continues, the Minister’s address has set a definitive tone: sustainability is not merely an environmental imperative, but a business opportunity that will define Botswana’s next era of economic growth.
