Uganda Partners with Champions Hockey League to Court Swiss Travelers

Targeting Switzerland’s 32% ice hockey fan base—a demographic where 65% list travel as a primary hobby—this initiative aims to diversify Uganda’s tourism market through innovative sports marketing.

Bern, Switzerland – In a bold move set to redefine international tourism marketing, Uganda has announced a landmark partnership with Infront Sports & Media, a global leader in sports marketing. Spearheaded by the Uganda Embassy in Switzerland in conjunction with the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), the collaboration will harness the popularity of ice hockey to showcase the “Pearl of Africa” to a vast, high-value audience across Switzerland and Europe.

Titled “The Pearl of Africa Shines on Swiss Ice,” the initiative represents a creative leap in destination marketing. By leveraging the platform of the Champions Hockey League (CHL), Uganda aims to introduce its unique wildlife, landscapes, culture, and hospitality to millions of sports fans, positioning itself as a premier adventure destination.

A Strategic Play on the Ice

The core of the partnership is the integration of Uganda’s “Explore Uganda” brand into the fabric of the Champions Hockey League. Ice hockey fans across Switzerland and Europe will be immersed in the allure of Uganda through a multi-faceted campaign featuring high-visibility stadium branding, engaging social media content, and targeted television exposure.

This approach is designed for meaningful engagement, connecting the thrill of fast-paced hockey with the excitement of an African safari or a Nile River cruise.

Switzerland has been identified as a premium tourism market for Uganda. The statistics underpinning this choice are compelling: approximately 32% of the Swiss population identifies as ice hockey fans, and remarkably, nearly 65% of those fans list travel as a primary hobby. This creates a perfect demographic overlap—a large, engaged audience with the passion, means, and desire to explore the world.

Furthermore, the partnership offers exposure far beyond Swiss borders. The CHL boasts a significant international footprint, having previously reached a cumulative seasonal television audience of approximately 153 million viewers across 53 territories. This presents an unparalleled opportunity for Uganda to showcase its brand across Europe, supporting the country’s efforts to attract international visitors and diversify its tourism source markets.

Voices of Ambition

The announcement has drawn enthusiasm from key stakeholders who view the partnership as a powerful bridge between nations.

“Sport has a unique ability to transcend borders and bring people together,” said Amb. Robert Marcel Tibaleka, Uganda’s Ambassador to Switzerland. “The popularity of ice hockey in Switzerland provides us with a novel opportunity to tell Uganda’s story to a new audience. We want fans to know that beyond the thrill of the game awaits a destination offering equally unforgettable experiences. Uganda is a land of contrasts—from majestic mountain gorillas to the source of the River Nile—and we are eager to welcome more Swiss travelers.”

Echoing this sentiment, Ms. Idda Wadda, Head of Legal and Corporate Affairs at the Uganda Tourism Board, highlighted the partnership’s potential to drive tangible results. “Our goal is to transform this visibility into genuine interest and, ultimately, more visitors choosing to experience our destination,” she said. “By leveraging the far-reaching platform of the CHL, we can inspire a new generation of travelers to discover the Pearl of Africa.”

Beyond the Rink: A Destination of Adventure

The “Explore Uganda” campaign aims to present a destination as diverse and thrilling as the sport itself. Uganda, often called the “Pearl of Africa,” is a hub of extraordinary biodiversity. It is one of the few places on Earth where visitors can witness mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. The country’s ten national parks offer a stunning array of landscapes, from the savannahs of Queen Elizabeth National Park—home to tree-climbing lions—to the dense forests of Bwindi, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Beyond its wildlife, Uganda boasts the source of the mighty River Nile, offering world-class white-water rafting in Jinja. Its geography is defined by stunning lakes, including Lake Victoria, and the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains, known as the “Mountains of the Moon.”

A New Era of Marketing

This partnership signifies a sophisticated approach to tourism in an increasingly competitive global landscape. By aligning with a premier sporting event, Uganda is associating its brand with values of passion, competition, and camaraderie—qualities that resonate deeply with sports fans.

Infront Sports & Media’s expertise in digital engagement, broadcast production, and fan activation will be instrumental in cutting through the noise of modern advertising. As the “Explore Uganda” brand takes its place on the Swiss ice, the initiative stands as an invitation to adventure, strengthening the bonds of friendship between Uganda and Switzerland while setting a new benchmark for how nations tell their stories to the world.
