AviaDev Africa 2026: Botswana Unveils Vision for Continental Connectivity

Gaborone, Botswana – The Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana (CAAB), acting through the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, hosted a pivotal press conference on Tuesday 28 April 2026 to officially launch AviaDev Africa 2026. Set to convene from 10–12 June 2026 at the Gaborone International Convention Centre (GICC), the event marks a significant milestone as the continent’s premier air route development forum returns to Southern Africa.

Strategic Positioning for Botswana

Addressing the media, CAAB CEO Captain Thuto Toise emphasized the strategic importance of hosting the forum, positioning Botswana as an emerging powerhouse in Africa’s aviation sector.

“The AviaDev platform is designed to drive high-level engagement between airlines, airports, tourism authorities, and policymakers, translating dialogue into tangible connectivity outcomes,” Captain Toise stated.

The event aims to foster direct collaboration that goes beyond discussion, focusing on concrete actions to expand air links across the continent.

Scale and Industry Impact

Captain Toise highlighted the impressive scale of the upcoming gathering:

  • 450+ Delegates expected to attend.
  • 50+ Airlines participating from regional, continental, and international markets.
  • Global Integration: The convergence of industry decision-makers is projected to unlock significant new route opportunities and deepen Botswana’s integration into the global aviation network.

Beyond the Conference: The Okavango Delta Experience

A unique feature of AviaDev Africa 2026 will be its hands-on approach to destination marketing. The conference programme includes a curated familiarisation visit for 20 selected airline partners.

These partners will tour the Okavango Delta, world-renowned as a leading safari destination. This first-hand experience is designed to showcase Botswana’s premium tourism offerings, directly linking air connectivity with high-value travel experiences.

The Botswana Air Access Initiative

The briefing also reinforced the critical role of the Botswana Air Access Initiative, with the Botswana Tourism Organisation (BTO) serving as a key partner. This collaboration continues to align destination marketing strategies with enhanced air connectivity, ensuring that tourism growth is supported by robust flight networks.

A New Trajectory for African Aviation

As momentum builds toward June 2026, Botswana is crafting a narrative of access, ambition, and global relevance. The nation stands ready to welcome the global aviation community and chart a new course for tourism and air travel on the continent.
