WTTC Strengthens Global Team with Appointment of Kenyan Tourism Veteran Najib Balala
Madrid — The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has appointed former Kenyan Tourism Minister Najib Balala to its leadership team, marking a significant addition to the global organization’s advocacy and policy arm.
Balala, who served as Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife for over 12 years, has taken up the position of Executive Vice-President for Advocacy, Government Affairs and Research. Based at WTTC’s headquarters in Madrid, he will lead the council’s global advocacy agenda, government engagement strategies, and policy research initiatives. He will report directly to WTTC President & CEO Gloria Guevara.
A Track Record of Resilience and Innovation
Balala’s appointment builds on a distinguished career bridging the public and private sectors. During his tenure in Kenya, he was credited with steering the tourism industry through periods of political instability and global crisis. His open-door policy with industry stakeholders was widely praised, fostering a collaborative environment that prioritized growth and safety.
One of his most notable achievements occurred during the Covid-19 pandemic, where he spearheaded strategic policy changes that positioned Kenya as a global leader in travel safety. Under his guidance, Kenya became the first country in the world to receive the “Safer Tourism Seal,” a recognition of its rigorous health and safety protocols.
“His leadership drove the transformation of Kenya’s tourism sector through progressive policy frameworks and impactful destination branding,” noted the WTTC announcement, highlighting Balala’s ability to align government priorities with private sector ambitions on international platforms.
Strategic Vision for WTTC
In his new role, Balala aims to leverage his extensive diplomatic experience to strengthen WTTC’s relationships with governments and stakeholders worldwide.
“It is an honour and a privilege to be selected by WTTC for this role,” Balala said. “I am looking forward to working with the visionary WTTC Chairman Manfredi Lefebvre and President & CEO Gloria Guevara. I’ll be bringing my experience bridging the private and public sectors to WTTC’s overall strategic roadmap and ensuring it has strong relations with all the stakeholders in governments and beyond.”
WTTC President & CEO Gloria Guevara welcomed the appointment, emphasizing the organization’s growth. “Najib Balala’s substantial experience as a Cabinet Minister on the world stage will help WTTC grow our sector even further,” she stated. “We are seeing many new members join us, and old members return, as we continue to build one of the finest Travel & Tourism teams globally, offering world-class advocacy and support to the sector.”
The appointment underscores WTTC’s commitment to integrating high-level government experience into its strategic operations as the travel and tourism industry continues to recover and evolve globally.
