Ms. Khumoyame Assumes Role as Perm-Sec in Botswana’s Ministry of Tourism

The Ministry of Environment and Tourism in Botswana has announced the appointment of Ms. Abigail Lillian Khumoyame as its new Permanent Secretary. Her appointment marks a significant milestone in her distinguished career, reflecting the Government’s confidence in her leadership, technical expertise, and commitment to environmental sustainability.

In her new role, Ms. Khumoyame will provide strategic leadership and oversight across the Ministry’s departments, parastatals, and operational units. Her appointment is expected to strengthen institutional coordination and further advance the Ministry’s mandate of promoting sustainable environmental management, eco-tourism development, and the conservation of Botswana’s rich natural heritage for present and future generations.

Ms. Khumoyame is a distinguished and multi-skilled expert in environmental science, development practitioner, and academia with extensive expertise in sustainable natural resource management and community livelihood enhancement. She brings over twelve years of progressive professional experience gained across Government, Multilateral Development Partners, the Private Sector, Academia, and Civil Society Organisations.

Throughout her career, Ms. Khumoyame has demonstrated exceptional competence in:

  • Programme implementation, monitoring, and evaluation
  • Stakeholder engagement and institutional leadership

She is highly regarded for her strong analytical acumen and governance capabilities, particularly in the areas of:

  • Environmental and Social Impact Assessments

  • Interpretation and application of Botswana’s environmental legislation and regulatory frameworks

A founding recipient of the prestigious Barclays-F.G. Mogae Scholarship, Ms. Khumoyame holds a Master of Science (MSc) in Environmental Science from the University of Botswana.
