2026 Int’l Pairs Golf Tournament Launch Strengthens Zimbabwe as a Sports Tourism Hub
Harare, Zimbabwe — In a major stride toward establishing the country as a premier sports tourism destination, the Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Hon. Barbara Rwodzi, has officially launched the 2026 International Pairs Golf Tournament at the Sterling Hub in Harare.
Operating under the theme “Experience Zimbabwe, One Fairway at a Time,” the tournament highlights a rapidly growing sports tourism sector designed to drive economic growth and align with the nation’s broader developmental goals.
Driving Economic Growth and Vision 2030
The tournament builds upon a foundational Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in 2024 between the Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, through the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority, and Albatros Golf during the Sterling Hotel International Pairs Golf Tournament.
Speaking at the launch, Minister Rwodzi emphasized that sports tourism has evolved into a vital economic sector. It serves as a key driver for clustered tourism growth, directly contributing to President Cde. Dr. E.D. Mnangagwa’s Vision 2030, which aims to transition Zimbabwe into an upper middle-income status rooted in a Heritage-Based Economy.
Golf as a Tool for Soft Diplomacy
Minister Rwodzi lauded the initiative as a powerful vehicle for “Soft Diplomacy,” explaining that sports like golf allow Zimbabwe to showcase its cultural wealth on a global stage.
“Through golf, Zimbabwe continues to carry its flag high while showcasing its rich Culture, Gastronomy, Hospitality, and Tourism endowments to the world,” Rwodzi stated.
The Minister applauded the partnership for adopting a “Whole-of-Government and Whole-of-Society Approach” to advancing tourism through sport. Furthermore, she encouraged event organizers to actively bid for future editions of the tournament to be hosted locally, inviting international tourists to experience Zimbabwe’s unique attractions and hospitality firsthand.
The Road to Spain
Local golf enthusiasts and competitors are already looking toward the upcoming block of competition. The National Finals for the tournament are officially scheduled to take place on August 22, 2026, in Harare.
The stakes are high for local participants: the winning pair will earn the honor of representing Zimbabwe at the finals in Spain, further elevating Zimbabwean culture, heritage, and national identity onto the global sporting stage.
