The Complexity and Complementarity of Tourism: New Book Honors Industry Icons Bah, Balala & St. Ange

On April 4, 2026 — Senegal’s Independence Day — the tourism world will witness the release of a powerful new book: The Complexity and Complementarity of Tourism, authored by respected Senegalese tourism expert Mouhamed Faouzou DÉME. This landmark publication is more than a scholarly work — it’s a tribute to the visionary leaders who have shaped Africa’s tourism landscape and a call to action for a more sustainable, collaborative future.

The book explores the intricate web of relationships that define modern tourism — from government policy and private sector innovation to community engagement and biodiversity conservation. At its heart lies a deep belief in complementarity: that Africa’s tourism potential can only be unlocked through unity, shared values, and mutual respect among stakeholders.

To underscore this message, DÉME pays homage to three pioneering figures whose leadership has left an indelible mark on the continent:

  • Najib Balala (Kenya) — Former Minister of Tourism, instrumental in positioning Kenya as a global tourism destination.
  • Alain St. Ange (Seychelles) — Former Minister and President of the African Tourism Council, a champion of eco-tourism and Pan-African cooperation.
  • Hamat Bah (The Gambia) — Former Minister of Tourism, a passionate advocate for community-based tourism and regional integration.

“Their boldness, Pan-African vision, and commitment to sustainable and inclusive tourism have set a standard for the industry,” said DÉME. “Their legacy will continue to inspire future generations of tourism professionals and contribute to Africa’s prosperity.”

Alain St. Ange, one of the honourees, contributed the book’s afterword, emphasizing that nature is not just scenery — it’s a strategic asset. The book calls on governments, private sector actors, and local communities to recognize biodiversity as a foundational resource and to adopt practices that ensure tourism benefits both people and the planet.

Launch Events: Celebrating Unity and Vision

To mark the release, two special events will be held:

  1. April 4, 2026 — Dakar, Senegal
A celebration of Senegal’s independence and African tourism, featuring book signings, panel discussions, and cultural performances.
  2. Late April — Banjul, The Gambia

These events will bring together tourism stakeholders, policymakers, and industry leaders to discuss the book’s themes and chart a path forward for a more inclusive and sustainable African tourism sector.
