Zimbabwe Showcases Heritage-Based Economy at Mashonaland Central Cook-Out
Bindura – The Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) recently celebrated a milestone in gastronomy tourism at the Amai’s Traditional Cook-Out Competition for Mashonaland Central Province. Held at the Bindura University of Science Education, the event highlighted the nation’s thriving heritage-based economy and its growing status as a premier global travel destination.
Culinary Diplomacy and Global Recognition
The competition is a key pillar of the “Soft Diplomacy” initiative, reflecting the international recognition of Zimbabwe under the leadership of President Cde. Dr. E.D. Mnangagwa. This strategy, anchored by the mantra “Zimbabwe is a friend to all and an enemy to none,” has seen the country recognized by Forbes Magazine as the World’s Number One must-visit destination for 2025.

Under the vision of the Tourism Patron, First Lady Dr. Auxillia Mnangagwa, the event focused on the promotion of indigenous foods and national fabric. The competition showcased a variety of traditional delicacies, including:
- Mukoyo, Manyanya, and Mabumbe
- Seven Days Brew (the renowned traditional beverage)
These elements are designed to position Zimbabwe as a unique “food storytelling destination” tailored for international markets.
Economic Growth and Special Zones
The Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Hon. Barbara Rwodzi, addressed the gathering, calling on citizens to take pride in their heritage through domestic tourism. She identified intra-provincial travel as a critical driver for local revenue retention.
Minister Rwodzi specifically highlighted Kanyemba, which is poised to become a Special Economic Zone centered on cultural and heritage tourism. She also underscored government efforts to secure UNESCO recognition for Zimbabwe’s indigenous foods, ensuring their preservation on the global stage.
Looking Ahead to 2026
The Minister invited the province to maintain this momentum for upcoming international platforms, including:
- The Sanganai/Hlanganani Zimbabwe World Tourism Expo 2026 (to be held in Masvingo).
- The UN Tourism Regional Congress on Women Empowerment in Tourism for Africa (Victoria Falls).
The event concluded with a call for women to play a leading role in promoting Zimbabwe’s rich cultural identity, reinforcing the link between heritage preservation and economic empowerment.
