Deputy Minister Sotyu Champions Safety at Durban Beachfront Handover
Durban, KwaZulu-Natal — In a significant move to bolster tourism security in the area, Deputy Minister of Tourism Maggie Sotyu yesterday 12 May 2026 officiated the handover of specialized safety vehicles and uniforms to the eThekwini Municipality. The event, held at the Beach Café on the Durban Promenades, on the sidelines of Africa’s Travel Indaba 2026, marked a tangible step forward in the government’s strategy to make South Africa’s premier coastal destination a model of safety and resilience.
Speaking before a gathering of industry leaders, law enforcement, and municipal officials, Sotyu emphasized that safety is not merely a supportive function but the bedrock of tourism competitiveness.
“A destination that feels safe is a destination that can grow. A protected destination can attract investment, create jobs, and welcome the world with confidence.”
A Strategic Partnership in Action
The handover ceremony showcased a new fleet of patrol vehicles, quad bikes, trailers, and operational uniforms, all funded through the TOMSA Collaborative Fund. Sotyu commended the Tourism Business Council of South Africa (TBCSA) for directing tourism levy contributions toward these high-impact interventions.
The assets are designed to support a coordinated Tourism and Coastal Safety Unit, enhancing visibility and rapid response capabilities along the Durban beachfront and surrounding visitor zones. This initiative brings together the private sector, the eThekwini Municipality, Metro Police, SAPS, and the KwaZulu-Natal Film and Tourism Authority.
“This initiative demonstrates what becomes possible when industry and government work together with a shared purpose,” Sotyu stated. “The assets being handed over today are not merely resources. They are tools of visibility, responsiveness, and confidence-building. They represent tourism safety in action.”
Protecting Livelihoods and Building Trust
The Deputy Minister highlighted that tourism safety extends beyond visitor protection; it is intrinsically linked to the economic survival of local communities. When visitor confidence wavers, it is the workers, small businesses, and young people who suffer the most immediate consequences.
- Economic Impact: Safe destinations attract more investment and sustain jobs.
- Community Benefit: A thriving tourism sector ensures local livelihoods are protected and expanded.
- Global Reputation: A safe environment positions South Africa as a resilient hub for the continent and the world.
With thousands of delegates currently in Durban for Africa’s Travel Indaba, the timing of this handover sends a powerful message to the global market. Sotyu noted that the visitor experience begins the moment a tourist feels welcomed and secure.
A Message to the World
As the event concluded, the Deputy Minister issued a clear directive to the industry and the continent at large. The handover of these resources represents more than logistical support; it is a delivery of confidence.
“Today’s handover is therefore more than the delivery of vehicles and equipment. It is the delivery of confidence. Confidence in partnership. Confidence in Durban. And confidence in tourism as a driver of inclusive growth and opportunity,” she declared.
The event underscores a unified commitment to revitalizing eThekwini as a top-tier investment and tourism hub, ensuring that Durban remains not just beautiful, but safe for all who visit.
