South Africa Unveils New Tourism Board to Drive Economic Growth & Global Appeal

In a decisive move to revitalize the nation’s tourism sector, the South African Cabinet has given its concurrence to the appointment of a new, skills-based Board for South African Tourism (SA Tourism). The announcement, made on August 11, 2026, marks the end of an interim leadership period and sets the stage for a three-year term focused on strategic growth, digital innovation, and economic inclusion.

A Mandate for Renewal

Minister of Tourism Patricia de Lille welcomed the appointment, emphasizing that the new board brings a “collective expertise, diversity, and experience” essential for the next phase of the country’s tourism recovery and expansion.

“I am confident that the collective expertise, diversity and experience of the newly appointed Board will provide the strategic leadership required to strengthen South African Tourism, unlock new opportunities for growth and ensure that tourism continues to create jobs, stimulate investment and contribute meaningfully to South Africa’s economic prosperity,” said Minister de Lille.

The new Board members officially took office today, August 11, 2026, following the publication of their names in Government Gazette No. 55176. Their appointment aligns with Section 13 of the Tourism Act, 2014, and is designed to support the implementation of the Tourism Growth Partnership Plan.

The New Leadership Team

The Cabinet prioritized a mix of skills covering destination marketing, governance, finance, risk management, and digital transformation. The appointed members are:

  • Ms. Akona Nobulali Matsau – Deputy Board Chairperson
  • Ms. Carol Kholeka Zama
  • Ms. Mamochekoane Ramashole
  • Ms. Sandika Daya
  • Ms. Hazel Thulisile Xulu
  • Dr. Karen Smit
  • Mr. Khomotso Brian Mosehla
  • Mr. Graham Ian Wood
  • Mr. Luyanda Mpahlwa

  • Ms. Tasneem Carrim – Departmental Representative

The appointment of the Chairperson is expected to be published in the Government Gazette shortly.

Building on Stability

Minister de Lille took a moment to acknowledge the interim Board that guided the organization over the past year. “On behalf of Government, I wish to thank the Board that was appointed in the interim for its professionalism, dedication and invaluable service,” she stated. “Their leadership during this transitional period ensured stability, strengthened the organisation and enabled South African Tourism to remain focused on delivering its mandate.”

The selection process was rigorous, aiming to assemble a cohesive team that balances established leaders with emerging talent. The goal is to create a non-executive body capable of providing high-level strategic direction while allowing the executive team to manage daily operations effectively.

Strategic Priorities Ahead

With the new Board in place, SA Tourism is poised to tackle several critical objectives:

  • Digital Innovation: Embracing technology to enhance destination marketing and competitiveness.
  • Economic Impact: Driving sustainable growth, increasing visitor arrivals, and stimulating investment.
  • Inclusivity: Ensuring tourism creates jobs and benefits local communities across the country.
  • Global Positioning: Reinforcing South Africa as a “destination of choice” for travelers and investors worldwide.

As South Africa continues to position itself as a premier global destination, this leadership transition represents a pivotal step toward a more robust, resilient, and prosperous tourism sector.
