Botswana Champions Global Sustainability Standards at GSTC 2026 in Phuket

PHUKET, ThailandBotswana has reaffirmed its position as a global leader in conservation and sustainable travel following its high-profile participation at the 2026 Global Sustainable Tourism Conference.

Held from April 19–24 in Phuket, the conference operated under the theme “Towards Resilient and Sustainable Hospitality,” drawing together world leaders, policy-makers, and hospitality experts to align the industry with modern environmental standards.

Technical Leadership on the Global Stage

The Botswana Tourism Organisation (BTO) was represented by its Environment and Eco-Certification Manager, Mr. Mokganedi Ntana. His participation was highlighted by a high-level panel discussion focused on Natural Areas and Visitor Management.

During the session, Mr. Ntana shared Botswana’s “policy-driven” approach to managing delicate ecosystems. The discussion centered on the delicate balance required to:

  • Enhance the visitor experience without compromising biodiversity.
  • Prioritize conservation in high-traffic natural areas.
  • Safeguard the long-term integrity of national natural assets.

Aligning with Global Standards

A primary objective of BTO’s engagement was the strategic advancement of the Botswana Ecotourism Certification System (BECS). The organization is currently reviewing and enhancing this framework to seek formal recognition under GSTC standards.

By aligning BECS with these globally recognized benchmarks, Botswana aims to strengthen its quality assurance across the entire tourism value chain, ensuring that local hospitality businesses meet the highest international sustainability criteria.

A Vision for the Future

The conference concluded with a collective push for industry-wide resilience. For Botswana, this engagement marks a significant step in shaping a tourism future defined by responsible growth and enduring value.

Through these international collaborations, the BTO continues to ensure that Botswana remains a premier destination where the interests of both the people and the environment are protected for generations to come.
