South Africa: RPL Programme Empowers 50 Chefs in Mpumalanga & Limpopo
South Africa‘s tourism sector is experiencing a quiet revolution. The Department of Tourism today 11 March 2026, celebrated a milestone that speaks volumes about the power of recognizing real-world expertise: 50 chefs from Mpumalanga and Limpopo provinces received NQF Level 5 Occupational Trade certificates through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) programme.
From Experience to Accreditation
For years, many talented chefs in South Africa’s hospitality industry have faced a frustrating paradox. They possess years of hands-on culinary expertise, refined palates, and deep knowledge of their craft—yet lack the formal qualifications that unlock career advancement. The RPL programme addresses this gap directly, transforming workplace experience into recognized credentials.

Chef Simon Shilangu‘s journey exemplifies this transformation. Starting as a trainee chef at Southern Sun – Mbombela in 2015, Shilangu built his skills through years of dedicated work. The RPL programme allowed him to formalize his expertise, particularly in pastry work, earning him promotion to Chef de partie—a position that validates both his capabilities and his commitment to excellence.
Beyond Individual Success
But this isn’t just about individual career wins. Chef Sannah Mphonyana Mbewe highlights a deeper benefit: understanding one’s role within the broader tourism ecosystem. “I have gained so much knowledge about the tourism sector and the critical role I play in advancing the economy,” she reflects. This shift from technical competence to sector awareness transforms chefs into conscious contributors to South Africa’s tourism narrative.
The numbers tell an encouraging story. With over 260 chefs upskilled and certified across various provinces, the RPL programme is systematically addressing a critical skills gap in the tourism value chain. These aren’t hypothetical improvements—they’re real people stepping into leadership roles, mentoring the next generation, and elevating service standards across the hospitality industry.
A Call to Action
As Limpopo MEC Tshitereke Matibe eloquently stated at the certification ceremony: “South Africa’s tourism sector needs your talent, your creativity, and your leadership.” The message is clear—the nation’s competitive advantage in global tourism depends on recognizing and nurturing the expertise already present within its workforce.
For chefs considering their next career move, or for those who’ve invested years in hospitality without formal recognition, the RPL programme represents more than a certificate. It’s an investment in dignity, opportunity, and the chance to shape South Africa’s tourism future.
