Zimbabwe: Leading the Charge in Global Tourism’s New Era

The global tourism landscape is shifting, and Zimbabwe is firmly in the driver’s seat.

At the recent UN Tourism Ministers’ Summit—held just ahead of the prestigious ITB Berlin—the message was clear: emerging destinations are no longer just “full of potential.” They are performing on the world stage. Under the theme “Empowering Emerging Destinations: From Potential to Performance,” Zimbabwe’s own Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Hon. Barbara Rwodzi, shared the stage with global leaders to chart the future of travel.

Africa’s Tourism Surge by the Numbers

The data tells a story of a continent on the rise. In 2025, Africa saw a massive surge in travel, recording:

  • 80 million international arrivals.
  • US$55 billion in tourism receipts.

Zimbabwe is a primary engine of this growth. Minister Rwodzi proudly highlighted a 10% increase in arrivals for the country, reaching a total of 1,777,569 visitors. This isn’t just luck; it’s the result of “strengthened destination confidence” and strategic investments in the people and places that make Zimbabwe unique.

The Pillars of Success: Beyond the Sightseeing

What is driving this 10% jump? It’s a mix of modern strategy and deep-rooted heritage:

  • Strategic Infrastructure: Upgrades across the country are making it easier and more comfortable for the world to visit.
  • Gastronomy Tourism: We aren’t just showing you our landscapes; we’re sharing our flavors. Community-led food initiatives are putting Zimbabwean culture on the plate.
  • Regional Cooperation: Through the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA), Zimbabwe is working with its neighbors to prove that nature and tourism know no borders.

Looking Ahead: Vision 2030

The roadmap for the future is built on Heritage-Based Tourism. Minister Rwodzi reaffirmed our commitment to a model that empowers local communities, creates sustainable jobs, and preserves our history while innovating for the future.

As we look toward Vision 2030, Zimbabwe isn’t just participating in global tourism—we are redefining it. From our majestic heritage sites to the innovation in our local communities, we invite the world to see what happens when potential meets performance.
