Mosi Oa Tunya: Exploring the Majestic Smoke That Thunders
Finally, the long-awaited privilege is here! One of my favorite places in the world: the mighty, gigantic Victoria Falls. As one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is a destination absolutely worth exploring. Mosi-oa-Tunya (The Smoke That Thunders) invites you to savor its beauty and wonder.
From the iconic Big Tree to the thundering majestic cataracts, the City of Victoria Falls is dotted with hotels and lodges that serve as a “home away from home” for a while. Situated along the Zambezi River, which forms the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, it is a vital passage point for both nations. I had the privilege of viewing the Friendship Bridge from the Zambian side—what a sight to behold!
Victoria Falls town is an intimate place with a hospitable aura, matched by its warm-hearted people. It welcomes tourists from all over the globe annually, standing as one of Southern Africa‘s true jewels that exudes the raw power of nature through its rushing, roaring waters.
The weather is fair for most of the year, but my personal recommendation is to visit in April, just after the rainy season. You won’t regret it, though any season offers its own magic.

On a previous visit, I enjoyed lunch at the Lookout Café. It was a great experience with an epic location. The café overlooks the continuation of the Victoria Falls gorge, spreading out toward a panoramic view of the opposite side. If my description doesn’t fully capture it, just make the Lookout Café a mandatory stop on your itinerary once you arrive. You’ll know exactly what I mean.
Beyond the views, the town is rich in African heritage. Sculptures in every corner tell stories of the area’s history, origin, and culture. To fully experience the magic of Vic Falls, the Boma — Dinner & Drum Show is a must-attend event—you’ll have a story to tell afterwards!
The Elephant Hills Resort is another essential stop, even just for a check-in to soak in the ambience. For executives or business travelers, their conference rooms are ideal for functions. And the 18-hole golf course, frequently visited by roaming wildlife, is just the tip of the iceberg of what it has to offer.
Are you noting down your itinerary yet?
Other establishments worth exploring along the main road to the Falls include the Cresta Sprayview and the Ilala Lodge Hotel. There is an array of accommodation options and tour operators like Shearwater and Wild Horizons that can help you get the full exposure of Victoria Falls.
Make this your top bucket list destination this year!
