Turkish Airlines Doubles Down on South Africa with 20 Weekly Flights

Johannesburg/Cape Town — South Africa’s tourism sector received a significant boost this week as Turkish Airlines announced a major expansion of its direct services between Türkiye and South Africa. Starting October 2026, the airline will operate 20 weekly flights, doubling its current frequency and signaling strong confidence in the region’s travel market.

A Strategic Surge in Connectivity

The new schedule will see 10 weekly direct flights launched between Istanbul and Johannesburg, and another 10 weekly direct flights between Istanbul and Cape Town. This follows the current operation of just seven flights per week to each destination.

“This expansion is the result of deliberate engagements between Department of Tourism and Turkish Airlines, supported by growing demand for travel to South Africa,” said Minister of Tourism Patricia de Lille. “More flights mean more visitors, more trade, more investment, and ultimately, more jobs.”

The timing is strategic, with the additional capacity introduced just ahead of South Africa’s summer tourism season, a peak period for international arrivals.

Record-Breaking Momentum

The decision comes amidst a backdrop of surging travel numbers. In May 2026 alone, arrivals from Türkiye jumped by 92% compared to the same month in 2025. This specific growth trajectory underscores the strong market performance driving the route expansion.

South Africa’s broader tourism sector is also enjoying a renaissance:

  • 2025 Record: The country welcomed a record 10.5 million international arrivals.
  • 2026 Growth: Between January and May 2026, 4,761,108 international visitors arrived, marking a 12.8% year-on-year increase.

To sustain this momentum, South African Tourism and Turkish Airlines have agreed to launch a joint destination marketing campaign. This initiative aims to promote travel between the two nations and ensure the expanded route network maintains strong passenger demand.

Part of a Larger Connectivity Boom

The Turkish Airlines announcement is the latest in a series of positive developments for South Africa’s international air links. Recent additions include:

  • Air Europa: Launched its inaugural direct service between Madrid and Johannesburg in June 2026.
  • LATAM Airlines: Commenced three weekly direct flights between São Paulo and Cape Town just last week.

These moves collectively reinforce the implementation of the Cabinet-approved Tourism Route Development Marketing Plan. The strategy focuses on expanding direct connectivity, strengthening airline partnerships, and unlocking new investment opportunities for the region.
