Bill Oddie, a household name in the UK for his dual legacy of surreal comedy and passionate bird conservation, has died at the age of 85. His passing has triggered a wave of remembrances from fans and colleagues worldwide, with particular nostalgia surfacing from the Seychelles, where Oddie spent a transformative week in May 1985.

A Birding Pilgrimage to the Reef Hotel

Long before his fame as the eccentric birdwatcher of Springwatch and Birding with Bill Oddie, Oddie arrived in the Seychelles with a camera and a deep love for avian life. At the time, the islands were a burgeoning tourism destination, and Oddie chose the Reef Hotel (formerly a Holiday Inn) as his base.

Alain St. Ange, who served as the Marketing Manager and Executive Assistant Manager of the Reef Hotel at the time, has been one of the most vocal in sharing memories of the encounter. Now a prominent figure in the Seychelles tourism industry and former Minister, St.Ange recalled the visit with affection.

“I was at the time Marketing Manager and Executive Assistant Manager of the Reef Hotel, and had the honour of meeting Bill Oddie and spent a lot of time with him during his stay,” St. Ange said. “I was impressed by his friendly approach and funny character he was. Though he was in Seychelles not for his comedy show, but was instead filming for his Wildlife Shows and following his love of birds, the special funny side of Bill Oddie came through in every conversation.”

The visit was not a promotional tour for his comedy, but a genuine expedition to document the unique wildlife of the Indian Ocean. Even while tracking rare species, Oddie’s signature wit and warmth remained intact, leaving a lasting impression on the local team.

From The Goodies to Springwatch

Oddie’s career was a unique duality. He first rose to fame as one-third of The Goodies, the surreal sketch comedy trio that dominated British television from 1970 to 1972, running for nine seasons and 76 episodes alongside Graeme Garden and Tim Brooke-Taylor. The show was known for its chaotic humor and satirical take on pop culture.

However, it was his second act that cemented his status as a national treasure. Transitioning from slapstick to science, Oddie became the UK’s most accessible wildlife broadcaster.
