Africa’s Travel Indaba 2026 Kicks Off in Durban with Vision for “Unlimited Africa”
Durban, South Africa — Africa’s premier tourism event, Africa’s Travel Indaba 2026, officially launched today, Monday 11 May, in the vibrant city of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. Under the compelling theme “Unlimited Africa: Growing Africa’s Tourism Economy,” the four-day summit (11–14 May) is set to redefine the continent’s position as a global tourism powerhouse.
The opening day featured BONDay (Business Opportunity Networking Day), inaugurated by the Honourable Deputy Minister of Tourism, Makhotso Sotyu. This strategic kickoff focused on critical dialogues surrounding policy reform, entrepreneurship, destination competitiveness, and the digital transformation of African travel. Sessions ranged from reimagining “Africa’s Narrative as the World’s Tourism Powerhouse” to practical TikTok masterclasses on converting digital inspiration into actual bookings.
“BONDay reflects the evolving future of tourism and the many sectors shaping it,” organizers noted, highlighting the growing influence of sports tourism, music, fashion, and gastronomy on travel trends.
Presidential Opening and Strategic Focus
The spotlight will intensify tomorrow, Tuesday 12 May, when President Cyril Ramaphosa officially opens the Indaba. His address is expected to reinforce tourism’s status as a strategic economic driver for South Africa and the broader African continent.
Over the next three days, the event will host a diverse mix of delegates, including government ministers, international buyers, exhibitors, media, and tourism leaders. The agenda is designed to:
- Strengthen partnerships across the continent.
- Showcase Africa’s extraordinary tourism diversity.
- Shape an inclusive future that benefits local communities and entrepreneurs.
A Legacy of 40 Years
This year marks a significant milestone: over 40 years of the Africa’s Travel Indaba legacy. Organizers are using this anniversary to emphasize forward-looking commitments to revamp and future-proof the platform. The goal is to ensure Africa’s tourism economy remains dynamic, inclusive, and globally relevant.
Coinciding with Africa Month, the Indaba provides a unique platform to celebrate the continent’s heritage while driving economic growth. Media attendees are encouraged to engage with high-value storytelling opportunities, from policy announcements to cultural showcases.
