Botswana Tourism Organisation Showcases Culture, Strategy & Growth at 41st HATAB Conference
Maun – The 41st HATAB Annual Conference 2026, held this week in the tourism hub of Maun, served as a dynamic platform for the Botswana Tourism Organisation (BTO) to reaffirm its role as the architect of the nation’s travel narrative. Bringing together industry stakeholders, exhibitors, and government leaders, the event was a pivotal moment in advancing Botswana’s position as a premier global destination.
The event was addressed by the Minister of Environment and Tourism, Hon. Wynter Mmolotsi, who set the tone with a speech focused on strategic repositioning and long-term resilience.
Repositioning for Global Competitiveness
In his opening address, Minister Mmolotsi reaffirmed Botswana’s commitment to its signature high-value, low-volume tourism model. However, he stressed that maintaining this standard requires acceleration in diversification to meet shifting global market demands and address pressing climate realities.

The Minister outlined a vision for integrated tourism circuits designed to move beyond traditional wildlife safaris. By linking natural attractions with cultural heritage, urban experiences, and business tourism, the strategy aims to:
- Extend the average length of visitor stays.
- Deepen the overall traveler experience.
- Increase economic value across the entire tourism supply chain.
Tourism as an Engine for Economic Transformation
Positioning the sector as a central pillar of the Botswana Economic Transformation Programme (BETP), Hon. Mmolotsi highlighted ambitious targets for growing international arrivals and driving job creation. He emphasized that tourism is not just a leisure industry but a vital engine for national investment and economic stability.
To achieve these goals, the Minister identified specific bottlenecks that must be cleared immediately:
- Streamlining land allocation processes.
- Bridging critical infrastructure gaps.
- Reducing lengthy approval and licensing systems.
“Resolving these constraints is critical to accelerating delivery and attracting the investment needed to scale our potential,” Mmolotsi stated.
Data-Driven Decision Making
A major highlight of the conference was the announcement of new data initiatives designed to modernize how the sector is managed. The Minister highlighted the recent launch of the Tourism Dashboard on April 14, 2026, describing it as a milestone for real-time, evidence-based policy making.
Looking ahead, he confirmed the upcoming release of the Tourism Satellite Account in July 2026. This comprehensive tool will provide an internationally aligned measurement of tourism’s full contribution to Botswana’s national economy, offering clarity on the sector’s true economic footprint.
Legislative Modernization
Signaling a decisive shift in regulatory approach, the Minister announced the review of the Tourism Act of 2009. Nationwide consultations on the modernization of the legislative framework are set to commence this week. The review aims to ensure laws keep pace with the sector’s evolving ambitions and the need for a more agile, competitive industry.
A Call for Collaboration
Concluding his address, Hon. Mmolotsi issued a call for unity. He urged strengthened collaboration between government bodies, the private sector, and local communities to deliver an industry that is inclusive, resilient, and future-ready.
Immersive Cultural Showcase
At the heart of the conference, the BTO exhibition captivated attendees with a vivid window into the nation’s diverse portfolio. Designed as a “compelling expression of nature, creativity, and culture,” the display guided visitors through Botswana’s breathtaking natural wonders, from the Okavango Delta to the Kalahari, while highlighting unique cultural treasures that define the local identity.
The booth was more than just a visual spectacle; it was a strategic hub where the BTO articulated its core mandates to a gathered audience of industry professionals:
- Destination Marketing: Strengthening the global recognition of the “Brand Botswana” identity.
- Product Development: Diversifying experiences beyond traditional safaris to include cultural and urban tourism.
- Investment Promotion: Actively attracting new ventures and capital to the hospitality and tourism sectors.
- Quality Assurance: Managing the rigorous grading and classification of tourism enterprises to maintain world-class standards.
Leadership and Engagement
The BTO presence was marked by high-level visibility, underscoring a commitment to direct engagement with the industry’s backbone. The stall was honored by the visit of Mr. Kabo Motswagole, Board Member, and Mr. Justice Ofentse, Acting Chief Executive Officer.
Their presence reinforced the organization’s dedication to transparency and partnership. By engaging directly with exhibitors and visitors, the leadership team signaled that the national tourism narrative is a collaborative effort, requiring the synergy of both public vision and private sector execution.
Strengthening the Industry Fabric
Beyond the BTO’s strategic displays, the conference floor buzzed with a vibrant array of local organizations. From artisanal crafts to specialized tour operators, the event showcased the breadth of Botswana’s service ecosystem. This collaborative atmosphere highlighted the essential synergy between the BTO and local entrepreneurs, proving that a holistic travel experience is built on the strength of its smallest components.
In a statement following the event, the BTO extended heartfelt appreciation to its dedicated team. The organization credited their professionalism and passion as the driving force ensuring that Botswana’s brand continues to resonate with “distinction and purpose” across a rapidly evolving global industry landscape.
As the conference concluded, the message was clear: Botswana’s tourism future is not just about visiting a place, but experiencing a nation that is strategically curated, culturally rich, and ready for the world.
