Wings of Zambia: Celebrating Five New Captains & a National Milestone
From Lusaka to the Horizon: Vision 2030 in the Cockpit as Zambia’s Homegrown Captains Take the Helm
Lusaka, Zambia – In a significant boost to Zambia’s aviation sector, Zambia Airways has successfully graduated five local pilots following a comprehensive type rating and upgrade training program conducted in partnership with Ethiopian Airlines Group. The ceremony, held on April 22, 2026, at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre, marks a pivotal step toward national self-reliance in air transport operations.
The graduating cohort includes three Captains and two First Officers, all of whom are now qualified to operate the airline’s Boeing 737 and De Havilland Canada Q400 fleets. This achievement directly addresses the critical need for skilled aviation professionals in the region and aligns with Zambia’s broader economic development strategies.

A Strategic Investment in Human Capital
Speaking at the event, Acting Permanent Secretary Dr. Cynthia Balengu emphasized that this milestone validates the government’s commitment to investing in human capital. She noted that reducing reliance on foreign expertise is central to Vision 2030, Zambia’s long-term development blueprint.
“This achievement underscores the impact of deliberate investment in human capital in advancing national development goals, strengthening institutional capacity, and reducing reliance on external expertise,” Dr. Balengu stated.
Mr. Cornwell Muleya, Group CEO of the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), highlighted the airline’s role as a catalyst for national growth. He pointed out that a robust national carrier is essential for boosting trade, attracting tourism, and creating jobs.
Leadership and Partnership
Mr. Jomo Matululu, Chairperson of the Zambia Airways Board, described the graduation as a “tangible return on investment” and a key component of the airline’s strategy for operational excellence.
The airline’s CEO, Mr. Thomas Woldesenbet, expressed deep gratitude to the Ministry of Transport and Logistics and the airline’s strategic partner, Ethiopian Airlines Group. He credited the partnership for the seamless execution of the training, which adhered to strict international aviation standards.
Commitment to Safety and Standards
Ms. Jacqueline Musoba, the Airline’s Manager for Human Resources and General Services, outlined the company’s training philosophy. She reaffirmed that Zambia Airways is dedicated to:
- Building local capacity
- Adhering to international aviation standards
- Implementing competency-based training
- Fostering a strong safety culture through continuous professional development
This graduation event signals a new chapter for Zambia Airways, positioning it not just as a carrier, but as a cornerstone of Zambia’s industrial and tourism ambitions. With a growing team of locally trained pilots, the airline is better equipped to expand its route network and serve as a gateway for African connectivity.
