Ethiopian Airlines Sets New Standard for African Air Cargo with Boeing 777X Fleet
Aviation milestone as acquisition of next-gen Boeing freighters opens new horizon to power Africa’s logistics, and strengthen Africa’s global gateway
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia — Ethiopian Airlines Group, Africa’s largest aviation group, has officially signed an agreement with Boeing to acquire eight Boeing 777-8F and two Boeing 777F Freighters. The deal marks a significant expansion of the airline’s cargo fleet, adding next-generation 777X capabilities to its global logistics network.
The agreement represents the second order for the 777X family for Ethiopian Airlines, building on its historic purchase of eight 777-9 passenger jets that established the carrier as Africa’s first 777X customer. By pairing the proven performance of the existing Boeing 777 Freighter with the advanced technology of the new 777-8F, Ethiopian Airlines is positioning itself to meet rising global demand for air cargo.
A Milestone for African Aviation
Mesfin Tasew, Group Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines, emphasized the strategic importance of the new aircraft.
“This agreement marks another significant milestone in strengthening Ethiopian Airlines’ cargo capabilities while supporting the continued expansion of our global network,” Tasew said. “The addition of the Boeing 777-8F Freighters and 777F Freighters will enhance our ability to serve customers around the world with greater payload capacity, operational flexibility, efficiency, and sustainability. As demand for cargo services continues to grow, these aircraft will play a vital role in facilitating global trade, strengthening supply chain connectivity, and further reinforcing Ethiopia’s position as a leading cargo gateway between Africa and international markets.”
Tasew also highlighted the longevity of the relationship with the American manufacturer. “It also marks our long-term partnership with Boeing.”
Efficiency and Sustainability at Scale
The Boeing 777-8F Freighter, the newest member of the 777X family, is designed to set new standards in air cargo transportation. With a maximum structural payload of 118 tonnes, it offers the highest payload and range capability of any twin-engine freighter, allowing for the opening of new markets.
Key performance benefits include:
- Lowest Operating Cost: Delivers the lowest operating cost per tonne of any freighter.
- Fuel Efficiency: Reduces fuel use and emissions significantly compared to older models.
- Operational Commonality: Retains key features of the 777 Freighter, including common cross-sections and walkways, ensuring easy carriage of large outsize cargo.
Brad McMullen, Boeing Senior Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing, noted the significance of the order for both companies.
“Ethiopian Airlines’ order for the industry-leading 777 Freighter and new 777-8 Freighter highlights both the strength of our partnership and growing demand for air cargo worldwide,” McMullen said. “We appreciate Ethiopian Airlines’ continued confidence in Boeing and the 777 and 777X family of airplanes as it expands its cargo capabilities and global network. The airline continues to make history as the first in Africa to order the new 777-8 Freighter.”
Expanding the Gateway
Ethiopian Airlines currently connects more than 70 cargo markets across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and North America. Its existing dedicated cargo fleet includes:
- 12 Boeing 777 Freighters
- 2 Boeing 767 Freighters
- 4 Boeing 737-800SF airplanes
The addition of the new freighters will provide greater flexibility and capacity, reinforcing Ethiopian Airlines’ position as Africa’s leading cargo operator and one of the world’s fastest-growing air cargo carriers. The new aircraft will complement the existing fleet, which already ranks among the most highly utilized commercial airplanes in service.
