Wilson Airport Modernization High on Agenda as New Daily Flights Link Nairobi and Tanzania’s Safari Capital

Nairobi, Kenya – Kenya’s regional aviation landscape received a significant boost this week as Safarilink Aviation officially launched its third daily flight frequency to Arusha, Tanzania. The expansion is a strategic move to meet the rising demand for seamless travel between East Africa’s premier tourism hubs.

The launch, held at Wilson Airport, was presided over by Hon. CS Rebecca Miano, EGH, Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, and Mr. Moses Wekesa, Managing Director and CEO of the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA).

Strengthening the Regional Hub

The milestone is set to strengthen regional air connectivity, enabling “multi-destination” travel packages that allow tourists to transition easily between Kenya’s safari circuits and Tanzania’s northern tourism corridor.

During the event, Mr. Wekesa underscored the strategic importance of Wilson Airport as a critical pillar in Kenya’s aviation ecosystem. “Wilson Airport is among the busiest airports in Africa for general aviation,” he noted. “It plays a key role in facilitating tourism connectivity, business travel, and humanitarian operations across the region.”

A Roadmap for Growth

To support this growth, the KAA reaffirmed its commitment to the modernization and expansion of Wilson Airport. Key initiatives currently underway include:

  • Master Plan Development: A comprehensive long-term growth strategy.
  • Infrastructure Upgrades: Phased rehabilitation of runways and taxiways.
  • Efficiency Improvements: Expansion and repair of aprons to enhance operational flow for airlines like Safarilink.

Industry Alignment

The event signaled strong industry-wide collaboration, with Safarilink CEO Mr. Alex Avedi and Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) CEO Ms. June Chepkemei in attendance. Representatives from the Kenya Tourism Federation (KTF), the Kenya Association of Travel Agents (KATA), and the Kenya Association of Air Operators (KAAO) were also present, highlighting a unified effort to unlock new economic opportunities within the East African Community.

“These investments are aimed at improving passenger experience and positioning Wilson Airport as a more efficient and competitive regional aviation hub,” concluded Mr. Wekesa.
