Malawi Kicks Off 2026 Tourism Month, Spotlighting AI & Digital Innovation

Lilongwe, Malawi — The Ministry of Industrialisation, Business, Trade and Tourism has officially launched Malawi’s 2026 Tourism Month celebrations, placing digital transformation and artificial intelligence at the center of the nation’s travel strategy.

The formal opening on September 1 marks the beginning of a month-long national campaign designed to boost domestic travel, highlight destination management, and raise public awareness of the sector’s vital economic and cultural impact.

This year’s observance aligns directly with United Nations Tourism’s global World Tourism Day, celebrated annually on September 27. The official theme for 2026, “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism,” underscores the growing role of emerging technologies in modernizing travel experiences, strengthening destination management, and fostering sustainable growth across the industry.

In a public press release, the Ministry called on all sector stakeholders—including tourism enterprises, operators, and industry practitioners—to host aligned events and initiatives throughout September. The government emphasized that adopting AI and modern digital tools is essential to enhancing Malawi’s global competitiveness and overall attractiveness as a destination.

Tourism operators and organizations planning events during Tourism Month are requested to submit their schedules, dates, and venue details to Mr. Joseph Nkosi at the Department of Tourism (+265 999 511 976 / info@visitmalawi.mw) to be included in the official calendar of activities.
