Minister Nabeela Tunis Elevates Sierra Leone’s Profile at FITUR 2026
The International Tourism Trade Fair (FITUR) has always been a cornerstone for global travel exchange, but for Sierra Leone, the 2026 edition represented a pivotal moment of diplomatic engagement. Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Nabeela Farida Tunis, utilized the summit to strengthen international ties and champion a vision of tourism rooted in cultural identity and inclusive growth.
Through high-level meetings and strategic agreements, Minister Tunis showcased Sierra Leone as a country ready to contribute significantly to the global tourism dialogue.

In a series of productive sessions, most notably with the newly elected UN Tourism Secretary-General, H.E. Shaikha Alnuwais, Tunis successfully positioned Sierra Leone as a key partner in the continent’s evolving travel narrative.
1. A Historic Partnership with UN Tourism
The headline achievement of the summit was the formalization of a Letter of Intent confirming Freetown as the host for the 3rd UN Tourism Regional Forum on Gastronomy Tourism for Africa (April 24–26, 2026).
This agreement is a testament to the Minister’s advocacy for “gastronomy as diplomacy.” By bringing hundreds of global experts and chefs to Freetown, Sierra Leone is not just showcasing its own heritage—from its unique spice profiles to its coastal harvests—but is providing a platform for the entire region to explore how local food systems can drive sustainable job creation.
2. Championing Women in Tourism Leadership
In her capacity as Chair of the Women in Tourism Leadership Africa Committee (WiTLAC), Minister Tunis engaged in vital discussions regarding institutional support for female entrepreneurs. Her focus at FITUR was on creating measurable progress:
- Policy Alignment: Integrating gender-responsive strategies into national frameworks to ensure equitable growth.
- Knowledge Exchange: Collaborating with UN Tourism to provide technical assistance and data-driven planning for women-led tourism businesses.
- Capacity Building: Ensuring that the upcoming “Year of Culture and Creativity” prioritizes training and mentorship for the next generation of female leaders.
3. A Vision of Authenticity and Connection
During sessions with international tour operators, Minister Tunis offered a compelling narrative for the “Salone” brand. Rather than competing on volume, she emphasized the depth and authenticity of the Sierra Leonean experience.
“Tourism in Sierra Leone is not just about places; it’s about people, stories, and lived experiences,” Tunis remarked.
By highlighting the historical significance of sites like Bunce Island and the vibrant, modern energy of the “Year of Culture and Creativity,” the Minister is inviting the world to experience a destination defined by its resilience and warm hospitality.
Analysis: A Consistent Strategic Roadmap
The success at FITUR is the latest chapter in a clear, multi-year strategy designed to build a sustainable tourism ecosystem:
- 2024: “Tourism for All” (Building domestic foundations)
- 2025: “Year of Ecotourism” (Emphasizing environmental stewardship)
- 2026: “Year of Culture and Creativity” (Celebrating national identity)
The Verdict: Through her proactive diplomacy at FITUR, Minister Tunis has ensured that Sierra Leone is not only part of the global tourism conversation but is actively helping to shape a more inclusive and culturally rich future for African travel.
