Pieter Ham Takes the Reins at Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff, Johannesburg
A Caribbean-to-Asia hospitality career — including two Michelin-starred dining rooms in Geneva and leadership roles at Swire Hotels — now points toward the Westcliff ridge, where the new general manager wants the hotel woven into the city’s cultural, creative and business life.
Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff, Johannesburg has appointed Pieter Ham as General Manager, placing him at the head of one of the city’s most enduring addresses.
Ham takes responsibility for a property set high on the Westcliff ridge, overseeing its terraced gardens, the Lobby Lounge & Bar, Flames restaurant, The Grand Ballroom and the spa.
“An Entire Guest Journey”
For Ham, the hotel’s appeal lies in the breadth of what it offers rather than any single moment within it.
“The Westcliff is an entire guest journey rather than simply a dinner or a night away,” says Ham. “Whether someone is staying with us for two nights or joining us for dinner, they should feel cared for, recognised and genuinely welcomed. That comes from the people behind the experience, and I am excited to build on the strong culture already in place at The Westcliff.”
A Hotel Embedded in the City
The Westcliff occupies an unusual position in Johannesburg’s hospitality landscape, drawing international travellers and local residents alike through its restaurants, gardens, spa and event spaces. Strengthening those local ties is an early priority.
Ham says he wants the hotel closely engaged with the city’s cultural, creative and business communities, and his first weeks have been spent exploring Johannesburg’s neighbourhoods, galleries and restaurants, and meeting the people shaping the city’s future.
“This city is full of people making remarkable things,” he says. “And I want the hotel connected to all of it, from the inside.”
A Career Across Four Continents
Ham’s path to the Highveld runs through the Caribbean, the Middle East, Europe and Asia, beginning with stints in destinations including St Barths and Cairo.
He was closely involved in the opening and operation of QO Amsterdam, a sustainability-led lifestyle property, before moving to The Woodward in Geneva. There he oversaw Food and Beverage, including the two Michelin-starred Atelier Joël Robuchon and Le Restaurant Le Jardinier.
He subsequently joined Swire Hotels, holding senior positions at The Upper House in Hong Kong before serving as General Manager of EAST Beijing.
A graduate of Hotelschool The Hague, Ham later completed a finance-focused MBA at Nyenrode Business University — a combination of operational training and commercial grounding that underpins his approach to running a property.
Leading Through Ownership
Colleagues describe Ham as collaborative and direct. He holds that exceptional hospitality begins with engaged colleagues who are empowered to take ownership and create meaningful connections — a philosophy he sees as closely aligned with the Four Seasons approach to people, service and genuine hospitality, and one that will guide his leadership of the Westcliff team.
Ham has relocated to Johannesburg with his wife and their three young children. The family, he says, is drawn to the country’s landscapes, culture and heritage, and to time spent outdoors, on the sports field and around a table with friends.
