The Road We Never Planned: Finding Success Beyond the Classroom — Biubwa Omar

As we mark International Women’s Day, I’ve been reflecting on the journeys we take as women. Too often, we’re taught there’s only one “right” path to success: finish school, earn a degree, land a job. But what happens when life veers off that script?

To every woman who feels her path hasn’t unfolded as planned—I want you to know: a detour is not a dead end.

When the Door Closes

There was a time I felt like I’d failed. I struggled academically, and eventually, I couldn’t afford to continue. Like so many young women, I faced a choice: give up—or find another way.

I chose to work. Not for a dream job, but for a chance to learn and support myself.

Learning Without a Common Language

My first steps into the professional world were far from easy. I didn’t speak a word of English. My manager was Italian—he didn’t speak Swahili.

Communication felt like an impossible wall. But he saw something in me: a spark, a willingness to try. Through patience, grit, and stubborn determination, I began to learn. I took every training I could find. Slowly, I improved—and eventually, my effort caught the attention of company leadership.

The Power of Experience

I saved enough to return to college—the goal I thought I always wanted. Then, my mentor gave me advice that shifted my perspective: “Keep working, learning through experience, and taking specialized courses after hours. That path may open more doors than a degree alone.”

I realized then: education isn’t confined to lecture halls. It’s in the courage to face what you’re unprepared for—and the discipline to master it anyway.

A Message to My Fellow Women

Looking back at a photo of myself from December 2008, I see a young woman unsure of her destination—but certain she wouldn’t stop moving.

“Failing in school or lacking the funds to continue your education doesn’t mean the end of your future. Life offers many paths—and sometimes, the road we never planned is the one that lifts us highest.”

To every woman feeling discouraged today: Believe in your strength. Keep learning. Keep evolving. Keep moving forward. Your story is still being written—and the best chapters often come after the hardest ones.
