Botswana and Rwanda Deepen Economic Ties at Gaborone Business Forum

Gaborone, Botswana – In a milestone for regional integration, Botswana and Rwanda have forged a new phase of structured economic engagement during a high-profile two-day Business Forum which kicked off on Tuesday May 5, 2026.

The forum, hosted at the University of Botswana Conference Centre, preceded the official state visit of Rwandan President Paul Kagame on May 6–7. Facilitated by President Advocate Duma Boko, the gathering convened the Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC) and the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) to accelerate bilateral trade and investment.

Diversification and Industrial Growth

BITC CEO, Mr. Keletsositse Olebile, underscored Botswana’s shift toward value-added production. Highlighting a diversified export portfolio that now includes beef, aluminum boats, textiles, and manufactured goods, Mr. Olebile invited Rwandan investors to explore opportunities in:

Tourism: A Convergence of Purpose

The forum identified tourism as a primary area of synergy. By aligning Botswana’s wilderness offerings with Rwanda’s premium eco-tourism model, both nations aim to unlock joint travel packages and cross-border investment in sustainable infrastructure.

MICE Readiness and Global Visibility

The recent success of the Debswana World Athletics Relays, held in Gaborone on May 2–3, 2026, was highlighted as a testament to Botswana’s growing capability in the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) sector.
