EDITION Hotels Makes African Debut with Luxury Property at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront

Marriott International’s luxury lifestyle brand expands its global footprint into Southern Africa, launching a 142-key property designed by Neri&Hu that blends maritime heritage with high-end dining and local art at the historic V&A Waterfront.

Marriott International’s luxury lifestyle brand EDITION has officially opened its first African property, The Cape Town EDITION, at the historic Quay 7 on the V&A Waterfront. Framed by Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean, the 142-key hotel marks a significant expansion for the brand, which currently operates 23 properties globally in destinations ranging from London and Tokyo to Lake Como and Riviera Maya.

The opening positions Cape Town as a natural home for EDITION, joining a portfolio defined by “thoughtful design, carefully curated culinary experiences and a strong sense of cultural relevance.”

A Maritime Gateway Reimagined

Situated within Cape Town’s historic working harbor, the hotel overlooks the Waterfront’s new superyacht marina. The architecture, designed by Beijing-based Neri&Hu in collaboration with local Cape Town firms, draws heavily on the site’s industrial maritime character. The long, low-slung building features pitched rooflines and a façade constructed from more than six million bricks laid by hand in shifting patterns—a nod to the warehouse structures that previously occupied the site.

At the heart of the hotel is “The Drum,” a soaring cylindrical atrium open to the sky. A spiraling staircase leads to an outdoor viewing platform that offers guests panoramic views of the harbor, Table Mountain, and the Atlantic.

“The opening of The Cape Town EDITION is an important milestone in the V&A Waterfront’s continued evolution and a strong expression of confidence in Cape Town as a globally competitive tourism and investment destination,” said Graham Wood, CEO of the V&A Waterfront. “It also signals the next chapter for Granger Bay: a well-connected waterfront district that creates long-term value for Cape Town, our visitors, and the communities we serve.”

Design and Local Craft

The interiors balance refined comfort with a residential sensibility, featuring bespoke furniture and natural finishes inspired by 19th-century travel trunks. Custom furnishings and rugs woven by KwaZulu-Natal-based Shuttleworth Weaving bring local craft into the guestrooms. The property’s two largest suites—the 240-square-meter Penthouse and the 112-square-meter Harbour Suite—offer generous living spaces with panoramic outlooks.

Throughout the hotel, art serves as a reflection of Africa’s creative landscape. Design Network Africa sourced progressive pieces from makers across the continent, including Zulu ukhamba vessels and mouth-blown recycled glass from Eswatini. Cape Town’s Southern Guild curated an art collection featuring established and emerging African voices, such as Zanele Muholi’s black-and-white photographic portraits in Punch Room and Usha Seejarim’s Fading Dish Cloth in the spa.

Culinary and Wellness Experiences

The hotel’s food and beverage program is led by Executive Chef Phil Carmichael and South African beverage partner George Hunter. The property features several distinct venues:

  • Shale: The signature restaurant, offering a seasonal menu that draws on local farmers, coastal fisheries, and winemakers. Meat is dry-aged in-house, and the wine list focuses predominantly on South African producers.
  • EAVE: An indoor-outdoor rooftop restaurant and bar beside the heated pool, serving small plates that showcase flavors from the Winelands and coastline.
  • Punch Room: A revival of the centuries-old drinking ritual, featuring wood paneling, velvet banquettes, and local punches like Brandewijn—a mix of brandy, Pinotage, rooibos, and winter spice.
  • The Lobby Bar: Designed to feel like a Cape Town living room, transitioning from morning coffee to evening drinks.

Wellness offerings include a spa situated below sea level, featuring five treatment rooms, a couples’ suite, and recovery amenities like infrared beds and Therabody boots. The spa uses Omorovicza’s mineral-rich formulations, while the 24-hour gym and rooftop sun deck offer daily yoga, breathwork, and sound bath sessions.

A Social Nexus for Locals and Travelers

Leonie Andereya, General Manager at The Cape Town EDITION, emphasized the property’s dual focus on hospitality for both visitors and residents.

“We want The Cape Town EDITION to feel as relevant to a Capetonian as it does to someone visiting the city for the first time,” Andereya said. “Inspired by the warmth and authenticity of South African hospitality, we have created a place where locals and travelers come together through food, culture, creativity and conversation. Sophisticated but never formal, it offers a distinct lens on Cape Town and the feeling that you have discovered a side of the city, and a community within it, that you genuinely want to be part of.”

George Fleck, Senior Vice President and Global Brand Leader for EDITION, added: “Cape Town has a distinctive energy shaped by extraordinary landscapes, diverse influences and an exceptional culinary scene. As one of the world’s most compelling cultural capitals, it is a natural home for EDITION. This opening marks an important milestone for the brand as we continue to grow in destinations that sit at the intersection of culture, creativity and global influence.”
