Ghana Unveils Smart Tourism System to Lead Africa’s Digital Travel Revolution
Accra — The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has officially launched the Ghana Tourism Information System (GTIS), a landmark digital platform designed to modernize the country’s tourism administration and boost its global competitiveness.
The launch, held at the Accra City Hotel, marked a strategic shift from traditional management to data-driven tourism governance. The event gathered industry leaders, private sector operators, development partners, and GTA management to witness what officials are calling a transformative step for the sector.
“Tourism is no longer simply about attractions and destinations. The future of tourism is driven by information, innovation, efficiency, and strategic intelligence.”
— Maame Efua Houadjeto, CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority
A Centralized Digital Hub
The GTIS serves as a centralized digital platform intended to streamline every facet of tourism operations. Key functions of the new system include:

- Regulation: Automated licensing and registration processes for operators.
- Compliance: Real-time monitoring of sector adherence to standards.
- Analytics: Sector-wide data to support evidence-based decision-making.
- Coordination: Enhanced collaboration between stakeholders across the value chain.
Leadership Vision
During the event, Ekow Sampson, Deputy CEO in charge of Operations, emphasized that the system is a critical intervention for future planning. “The future of tourism development depends heavily on data, innovation, and efficient systems,” Sampson stated. “The Ghana Tourism Information System will provide the platform needed to improve planning, regulation, and service delivery across the tourism value chain.”
Ben Anane Nsiah, Deputy CEO for General Services, added that the initiative signals Ghana’s readiness for the future through institutional modernization.
The ceremony was masterfully orchestrated by Gilbert Abeiku Aggrey, Deputy CEO for Marketing and Special Duties, who guided the proceedings and highlighted the importance of the system’s long-term impact.
Stakeholder Optimism
Following a robust Q&A session where stakeholders sought clarifications on implementation and objectives, CEO Maame Efua Houadjeto officially activated the system alongside the three Deputy CEOs, Mr. Seth Ocran (President of the Ghana Tourism Federation), and other industry leaders.
The symbolic launch underscored a collective commitment to:
- Increase transparency in tourism operations.
- Boost investor confidence through reliable data.
- Enhance destination management for better visitor experiences.
- Support investment growth within the hospitality and travel sectors.
As Ghana positions itself as a leading tourism destination in Africa, the GTIS represents a significant leap toward a more efficient, regulated, and data-rich tourism ecosystem. The GTA has reaffirmed its dedication to innovation and strategic partnerships to unlock the full economic potential of the industry.
