Anantara Tented Camp Kafue River Begins Welcoming Guests

Minor Hotels has opened reservations for Anantara Tented Camp Kafue River, a new 13-key safari retreat in Kafue National Park that marks the brand’s first tented camp and a milestone in Anantara’s 25th anniversary year.

The camp, which sits within one of Africa’s largest protected areas, is positioned as part of a broader ecological restoration effort in partnership with the Government of Zambia and African Parks. Designed as a low-impact luxury escape, the property operates on solar power, avoids single-use plastics and uses raised timber platforms to preserve wildlife movement and the surrounding landscape.

Low-impact safari experience

Anantara Kafue is Zambia’s only lodge elevated at least 3.5 metres above the ground, offering uninterrupted views of the Kafue River while minimizing its footprint on the environment. The camp’s design by Meg Ralph Spaces has been recognised with LIV Hospitality Design Awards, and its prefabricated structures were used to protect existing trees and natural habitat.

Guests can explore the park through game drives, river safaris, guided walks, bush picnics and catch-and-release fishing, with wildlife sightings including hippos, elephants, predators, antelope and more than 500 bird species. Soft red lighting is used at night to reduce disruption to nocturnal animals.

Suites and villas

The property’s accommodation includes three Horizon Terrace Suites, described as the highest suites in Zambia, each suspended 14.3 metres above the ground and accessed by a glass elevator. The camp also offers nine Pool and Bush Villas with private plunge pools and indoor spa rooms, as well as a 400-square-metre Presidential Villa with exclusive river views, boat access and a private spa area.

All villas come with dedicated hosts to arrange dining, wellness and activities, reinforcing the property’s focus on personalised service and privacy. The design and service model aim to balance comfort with a deep connection to the surrounding wilderness.

Dining and wellness

Dining is built into the guest experience, with a floating pontoon on the river hosting breakfasts, afternoon tea and sunset dinners. Guests can also dine at Luzuba Harvestry and Twalumba Bar & Lounge, which serve modern Zambian cuisine, cocktails and fireside gatherings, while Spice Spoons offers hands-on cooking classes.

Wellness experiences include in-room Anantara Spa treatments, steam sessions in suites or villas, and a floating Technogym fitness platform for private training, yoga and relaxation. The camp also offers nature-based activities such as birdwatching and stargazing, extending the wellness concept into the landscape.

Executive comment

“Three years in the making, Anantara Tented Camp Kafue River is a significant step in our expansion across Africa and reflects the shared vision of the Government of Zambia, African Parks and Anantara,” said Nico Vivier, Regional Director of Operations and Development for Minor Hotels in Africa. “Its location within a major conservation landscape allows us to introduce a new standard of low-impact luxury in Zambia while contributing to the long-term restoration of Kafue National Park.”

The camp is accessible via private charter flights from Livingstone or Lusaka to Chunga airstrip, as well as short domestic flights from Livingstone. Lusaka International Airport is about a four-hour drive away.
