Uganda Airlines Secures Major Fleet Expansion with Boeing Deal
Kampala, Uganda – In a landmark move set to reshape East Africa’s aviation landscape, Uganda Airlines has signed a strategic agreement with Boeing to acquire ten new aircraft, including eight passenger jets and two cargo freighters. The deal, witnessed by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni at State House, marks a pivotal step in the national carrier’s ambition to become a leading aviation hub in the region.
A Transformative Investment
The agreement includes the acquisition of:
- 8 new passenger aircraft (specific models to be finalized during negotiations)
- 1 Boeing 767 wide-body converted freighter
- 1 Boeing 737-800 Boeing Converted Freighter (BCF)
“This is a strategic investment in Uganda’s future and a major step towards establishing Uganda as a leading aviation hub in the region,” the airline stated following the ceremony. The expansion aligns directly with the government’s Uganda Vision 2040, aiming to propel the nation toward sustainable middle-income status through enhanced global connectivity.
Boosting Key Economic Sectors
The new fleet is designed to support Uganda’s Agriculture, Tourism, Minerals, and Services (ATMS) framework:
- Tourism: Increased flight frequencies will open new routes for international visitors, a critical boost for a sector that remains a top foreign exchange earner.
- Trade & Cargo: The two freighters will streamline exports of agricultural produce and minerals, significantly reducing spoilage and delivery times to global markets.
- Investment: Improved air connectivity is expected to attract foreign direct investment and facilitate business travel.
Boeing’s Commitment to Growth
Anbessie Yitbarek, Boeing’s Vice President of Sales, emphasized the manufacturer’s long-term dedication to Uganda Airlines beyond just hardware delivery. The partnership includes commitments to:
- Provide technical expertise
- Deliver comprehensive training programs
- Support capacity-building initiatives
Yitbarek’s presence at State House alongside the President underscored Boeing’s confidence in Uganda’s aviation strategy and the long-term viability of the national carrier.
Strategic Significance
The signing ceremony brought together senior government officials, representatives from the U.S. Embassy, the Uganda Airlines Board of Directors, and Boeing executives. Industry observers view this as a powerful signal of intent from both the Ugandan government and Boeing to capture a larger share of Africa’s rapidly growing air travel and cargo markets.
While formal negotiations and finalization processes are underway, the deal represents more than a fleet renewal—it is a strategic pivot. As regional rivals expand their own operations, Uganda Airlines is positioning itself to dominate East African connectivity, driving trade, tourism, and economic transformation across the continent.
