Kenya Honours Raila Odinga’s Legacy as President Ruto Commissions Mausoleum in Bondo
The site at Kang’o ka Jaramogi will serve as a national heritage centre under the National Museums of Kenya, preserving the legacies of three generations of the Odinga family and Kenya’s democratic struggle.
Bondo, Siaya County — Kenya has officially commemorated a defining chapter of its political history with the commissioning of the Raila Amolo Odinga Mausoleum at Kang’o ka Jaramogi, the historic ancestral home and final resting place of Kenyan political icon Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, located in Nyamira village, Bondo, Siaya County.
The ceremony, led by His Excellency President William Ruto and joined by H.E. Amb. Ida Odinga, Kenya’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), which took place yesterday 7 October 2026, served as both a farewell to a political titan and a reaffirmation of the democratic values he championed.
‘Father of Our Democracy’
In his address, President Ruto eulogized Raila Odinga not just as a political rival or ally, but as a foundational figure in Kenya’s constitutional journey.
“We celebrate Raila Amolo Odinga as the father of our democracy, a champion of inclusion and national unity,” President Ruto stated. “Raila’s long struggle helped expand Kenya’s democratic space and give every citizen a stronger voice in the affairs of our country.”
The President emphasized that the sacrifices made during decades of political turmoil must yield tangible results for the average Kenyan. He called on the nation to honour Raila’s legacy by pursuing “better lives for Kenyans through greater opportunities, social justice, equitable development and a government that serves every citizen regardless of region, community or political persuasion.”
A Landscape of Legacy
Principal Secretary Ummi Bashir (CBS), outlined the historical significance of the Kang’o ka Jaramogi site, which now serves as the final resting place for both Raila Odinga and his father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Kenya’s first Vice President.
“Kang’o ka Jaramogi carries an even deeper historical significance, bringing the legacies of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga into one heritage landscape that connects pivotal chapters of Kenya’s independence, democratic and constitutional history,” PS Bashir said.
By consolidating these legacies in one location, the government aims to create a cohesive narrative of Kenya’s political journey, framing Raila’s life within the broader context of the nation’s struggle for multi-party democracy and constitutional reform.
National Heritage and Education
The mausoleum will be placed under the custodianship of the National Museums of Kenya (NMK). The institution is tasked with preserving the site and developing it into an interpretive centre where the late leader’s contributions can be studied and appreciated by future generations.
“His mausoleum now gives Kenya a permanent national heritage site where that extraordinary journey will be preserved and interpreted for generations,” PS Bashir noted.
The facility is expected to serve as an educational resource, offering insights into the struggles and triumphs that shaped modern Kenya. By framing Raila Odinga’s life within the broader context of the nation’s constitutional and democratic development, the site aims to inspire civic engagement and historical awareness among Kenyans.
A Commitment to Bondo
Addressing residents of Bondo and Siaya County, President Ruto reaffirmed the government’s commitment to carrying forward Raila’s vision of an inclusive Kenya. He stressed that no part of the country should be left behind in the nation’s development agenda, echoing Raila’s own advocacy for marginalised regions.
“Baba’s journey was intertwined with decades that transformed our country,” PS Bashir concluded. “May Baba rest in eternal peace, and may the story of his service to Kenya live on in the generations that follow.”
The opening of the mausoleum closes a period of national mourning and transitions Raila Odinga’s legacy from active politics to permanent history, ensuring that his role in shaping the nation remains a tangible part of Kenya’s cultural heritage.
