Freetown, Sierra Leone – In a significant move to bolster the nation’s travel appeal, Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh officially commissioned the Leicester Peak Viewpoint on April 24, 2026. The ceremony marks a pivotal advancement in Sierra Leone‘s agenda to diversify its economy through sustainable tourism.
Perched at a prime elevation overlooking the Freetown Peninsula, the newly developed facility offers breathtaking panoramic views. The site has been transformed into a polished visitor experience featuring:
- Modern viewing decks and comfortable rest areas designed for extended stays.
- Eco-conscious landscaping that preserves the natural environment while enhancing aesthetics.
- Essential amenities, including dedicated parking facilities and public conveniences.
A Strategic Economic Shift
The project was implemented under the Sierra Leone Economic Diversification Project (SLEDP) with financial and technical support from the World Bank. Nabeela Farida Tunis, Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, emphasized that the initiative reflects a deliberate strategic pivot. The goal is to strengthen sustainable sectors while reducing the country’s long-standing economic dependence on extractive industries.

This development is a direct result of the 2024 National Tourism Policy, which has prioritized three key pillars:
- Capacity building for local tourism stakeholders.
- Strategic infrastructure investment.
- Aggressive destination marketing to drive visitor arrivals.
Empowerment Through a Community-Inclusive Model
Beyond physical infrastructure, the project introduces a community-inclusive model designed to ensure long-term social impact. Under this framework:
- Direct Benefits: A portion of the proceeds generated from the site will flow directly to the people of Leicester, reinforcing local ownership and economic participation.
- Job Creation: Insights shared during the ceremony highlighted the project’s role in creating employment opportunities, with a specific target on hiring women and youth.
- Future Replication: The government plans to use the Leicester Peak model as a blueprint for developing other scenic locations across the country.
High-Level Endorsement
The commissioning event brought together a distinguished group of leaders, including Finance Minister Sheku Fantamadi Bangura, senior government officials, private sector representatives, and members of the Leicester community.
